Ricky Gervais
Ricky Gervais (born June 25, 1961) is a British comedian, actor, writer, and creator of successful BBC comedies The Office and Extras.
Ricky Gervais had an interesting early career, with turns as a pop singer, band manager, and radio producer. Later, he contributed comedy sketches to radio and TV shows, with writing parter Stephen Merchant, eventually leading to the creation of The Office in 2001. The Office ran for two successful seasons on BBC television, before Gervais decided to end the show on a high note. Since then, several versions of the show have been produced internationally – including the successful American series starring Steve Carell.
Gervais next series, Extras, was a co-production between the BBC and HBO. This series centered around the lives two characters who worked as background extras for TV and movies. Each episode of the series had a famous special guest star playing a “heightened reality” version of themselves, including Kate Winslet, Ben Stiller, Samuel L. Jackson, Patrick Stewart, Daniel Radcliffe, Ian McKellen, and David Tennant.
A true renaissance man of British comedy, Gervais is also an author, including the successful Flanimals book series, about nonsense animals.
A highly successful and hilarioius podcast, The Ricky Gervais Show, starring Gervais, Merchant and Karl Pilkington was one of the most successful podcasts ever made. Much of the podcast focusses on the Gervais and Merchant relentlessly poking fun at the seemingly naive Pilkington’s statements. Episodes continue to be recorded sporadically, as the careers of its stars permit.
Gervais has recently turned his attention to Hollywood films, including Ghost Town (2008) and the forthcoming This Side of the Truth.
